BENJI: Interview

I'm very excited to announce that I will be starting a new series on the blog featuring interviews with some of my favorite up and coming musicians!

I've had the pleasure of kicking things off with Benji Shuler (@TheBenjiMusic) and I was surprised to learn just how great of a guy he is. I mean, I knew he had a great voice (and is totally cute!) but he's also super nice and passionate about some amazing things, which you can read about below.

1.What music genre would you classify your sound as?

2. Which artists have inspired your music?
Drake, J.Cole, and Lecrae are my three biggest rap influences.

3. What are some of your short term and long term goals?
Short term is for the current situation I have signed a record deal with(but am not at liberty to speak in detail about) takes off like it seems to. Long term I hope to have my own label and reach the world with my message.

4. What message are you hoping to convey to your audience?
My message would definitely be love. I don't mean that in just a love between a man and a woman. I mean love as a lifestyle. We live in a dark world and I want to be a light. I think the best way to be a light is by spreading love. My faith is a huge part of my music but I don't like to be exclusive. For me, God is love so when I preach love, I preach the Gospel.

5. What has been your favorite memory from your music career so far?
I've had a lot happen in the last few months I'm still not at liberty to speak on. So prior to that I think my favorite memory would be my first show. I played at a "teen club"... Don't ask. It was a hilarious experience and I had no clue what I was doing. I'm very fond of that memory.

6. What location would be your dream spot for a concert?
Red Rocks in Colorado is one of the coolest venues in the world. I cannot wait to play there in time.

7. What's your favorite song currently and of all time?
That's a ridiculously hard question. Currently, I would say Apparently by J.Cole and all time I would say Juicy by Notorious B.I.G. I love rap, however, I listen to just about every genre. Those would be my favorite rap but there would be no way to narrow down all my favorites in general.

8. Who would you love to open a show for?
I would love to open for Lecrae. Obviously there are some other big rap guys I'd love to tour with but most closely content wise, touring with him seems plausible.

9. What are some other cool things about yourself?
A huge part of who I am is the mission work I do in Haiti. I have helped a lot at orphanages with some very amazing kids and also helped build homes that we have raised money for. I plan to start a non-profit for it very soon. I want to do music outreach based out of an orphanage. Haiti is a huge part of my journey and I credit a huge part of who I've become through my experiences down there. I am even getting a tattoo to celebrate what Haiti is to me and my 18th here this next week. It will say "Nou Se Youn Nan Jezi" which means "We Are One In Jesus." A man had been staring at me holding his two string guitar and as I walked up, he began to sing a worship song I joined in on. We stood for a solid 30 minutes singing just the chorus of "God Is So Good." As we parted ways, he shook my hand and said those words. I then asked a Haitian friend of mine what was said and he informed me. Ever since, that phrase has been dear to me.

As you can see, Benji is an incredible guy with a big future ahead of him. I can't wait to see where his journey will take him and I wish him all the best luck!
