Tips for a Festive Christmas Eve

Friday, December 22, 2017

Christmas is SO close! Believe it or not, there are still gifts I need to pick up. I'm definitely planning to have all of my Christmas shopping done by Christmas Eve though, so I can spend the whole day being festive! Hopefully you're doing the same, so here are some activities you can do on Christmas Eve to get into the holiday spirit! Don't worry, I left some time for last minute shopping just in case.

Bake Christmas Cookies

Start your day off right by baking Christmas cookies! You could do gingerbread men or sugar cookies and decorate them to make them extra festive. We decorated our cookies with iced trees and sprinkle ornaments.

Watch Your Favorite Christmas Movie

Mine would be the Grinch, but you can find lots of different Christmas movies on TV + Netflix on this list! This is a great way to relax on Christmas Eve. Make popcorn and hot chocolate and snuggle up in your pajamas!

Do Some Last Minute Shopping

There's nothing quite like the hustle and bustle of stores on Christmas Eve when everyone is rushing out to buy those last minute gifts. You can join the crowds if you still need a few things - it's definitely one way to get into the Christmas spirit.

Go to Your Religious Service

My family always goes to the Christmas Eve service at our church. Remember the reason for the season and join your religious service for their holiday event.

Drink Hot Cocoa with Lots of Marshmallows

I think Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are the two days of the year when you don't have to count how many cups of hot chocolate you've had. Go all out and have hot chocolate with breakfast, as a mid-afternoon snack, and again before bed. Don't forget the marshmallows!

Wear Your Christmas Pajamas

If you've gotten Christmas pajamas for this year or in years past, make sure you wear them on Christmas Eve! It's festive and cozy. If you don't have to go out on Christmas Eve, you should probably wear them all day.

Drive Around to See Christmas Lights

There are so many houses all around that have the most spectacular Christmas displays and lights. Research the best spots in your town and go enjoy their lights or just drive around and see what you find! You could bring hot chocolate in the car and play lots of Christmas music.

Listen to Christmas Music

Speaking of Christmas music, Christmas Eve is the day that you need to have that playing all day. Add some new tunes for your playlist and don't forget the holiday classics.

Make a Gingerbread House

Making a gingerbread house is so fun! Grab a cheap kit at a nearby store and have fun decorating your gingerbread house with all the sweet treats you can find. If you have a few people around, get two kits so you can compete to make the most extravagant house!

Take a Family Photo

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear and the best way to preserve Christmas memories is snapping a family photo! Prop your phone up with the timer on and get a picture of everyone in front of the tree so you'll always remember this year.

Exchange Gifts

I don't know how your family exchanges gifts, but we usually exchange with our cousins on Christmas Eve. It's so fun to space it out and have different exchanges for a few days. Or you could set aside one gift for each person in your family to open on Christmas Eve!

Leave Cookies & Milk Out for Santa

Be sure to leave out some of those Christmas cookies you baked earlier for Santa. Don't forget his milk too. Before you go to sleep, track Santa online to end your day with that traditional Christmas Eve experience!
